This is a very cool Ludwig kit and it belonged to my good friend Danny Gottlieb. Danny is a remarkable drummer and this set is one that he had specially built for him in the 80s when he was with Pat Metheny. There were only two sets like this ever made. One for Danny and one for another artist. Not sure if the other set even still exists, but Danny's set is here and it is in remarkable condition.
Ludwig hammered chrome over wood kit. 8x12", 11x12", 12x13" rack toms, 14x14", 15x16" floor toms, 14x20" bass drum, 5x14" Supraphonic snare. This set is from the era when Ludwig decided to attach the wrap finishes with rivets at the seams. They only did this for a very short time, but this is 100% original on this kit.
From Danny: The story was this... Billy Ludwig III was in charge of Artist Relations at Ludwig. They had just released their hand hammered chrome and bronze snare drums. I asked if they could hammer a Chromo-wood set to match the snare. They made 2 sets.. 1 for me, and one for the drummer in (I think) Foghat, or Blue Oyster Cult. Billy said they would never do it again, as it took too much time, was expensive, and a pain. There is an extra bracket on the side of the bass drum. This was their attempt to use add-on brackets and arms to eliminate additional stands. I think I got the set in 1982 or 1983, at the end of the time I was with Metheny. No recordings with it, but gigs.
Talk soon, thanks for all!
Danny.
This is a very cool set and one with a lot of history since Danny used it on gigs with Pat Metheny. $3850. We can ship it overseas but it will be expensive since this is a heavy set. The wood shells covered with the hammered chrome make it much heavier than just the wood shell sets.
