Here's how: In the past Gretsch drums had a single pricing schedule whether they were satin oil, a wrapped finish or gloss lacquer. They were a great deal, but now they're even better because for 2012 the pricing will be tiered based on the finish. Through an elaborate cost study the folks at Gretsch have reset the pricing based on the time and effort involved in the various finishes. The gloss lacquer finishes are the most expensive to produce due to the many hand rubbed coats of lacquer and all the sanding that is done between coats. The satin oil finishes are the least expensive since there is not a labor-intensive gloss lacquer process involved. The wrapped shells fall in the middle with the added cost items being materials and time.
