Harold Jones Gretsch Drum Set. Ella, Sarah

SOLD 5/1/19. This is an extremely cool set with a great provenance. This set belonged to Harold Jones, who was most famous as the drummer for Basie between 1968 and 1972, but who also went on to have an incredible career that is still going strong today. In fact, you can see him on tour with Tony Bennett.

Harold loved Gretsch drums. He played them with Basie and also long after. This particular set is an early Stop Sign Badge Gretsch set. 8x12, 14x14, 14x20. This set was used by Harold with Ella Fitzgerald and also for many years on tour with Sarah Vaughan. In fact, we have a video clip here of her concert from 1981 at the North Sea Jazz Festival and Harold is playing this set. See the clip HERE.

The set was in need of restoration when we got it from Harold. Many parts had gone missing and the set needed a very thorough cleaning. We have some "before and after" pics here for you. The color of this set is very interesting. At first glance it looks like a creamy solid pearl color, which is unlike anything in the Gretsch catalog. However, under the collar of the head the finish is more white. This would seem to be a solid white nitron that had aged. However, if this is the case, it has aged more evenly than anything I have ever seen. In any case, it is a very cool look.

The set has no extra holes. It had the Gretsch 4 hole rail consolette tom holder (which is missing, and very hard to find), so we have left those holes open on the bass drum until we find one. The mounted tom used a bracket exactly like the floor tom for the L arm that mounts to the tom holder and we will replace this when we find the tom holder. And, the internal mufflers on the toms were removed, but we will replace them. There is some inlay missing from the hoops, and believe it or not, the metal bass drum hoops are 100% original. Gretsch used metal bass drum hoops for a very short time in the SSB era. Check out this very cool set. And of course, they have That Great Gretsch Sound! As soon as I have a chance I will do a video with these and post it for all to hear.
