Harold Jones Basie Band Walnut Gretsch Drum Set

SOLD 5/1/19. This is an extremely cool set with a great provenance. This set belonged to Harold Jones, who is most famous as the drummer for Basie between 1968 and 1972, but who also went on to have an incredible career that is still going strong today. He is well known as "the singer's drummer" because of his unique ability to know what to do (and what not to do) to make the singer's performance as perfect as possible. After his stint with Base from 1968-1972 he backed Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and many others. In fact, you can see him on tour now with Tony Bennett.

Harold loved Gretsch drums. He played them with Basie and also long after. This particular set is really a special one. This is the walnut finish Gretsch set that Harold used with the Count Basie band. Harold had a few different Gretsch sets that he used with Basie: There was a silver sparkle 13/16/22 (which we also have), as well as a satin flame kit (of which only the bass drum shell remains). And, there was this fabulous walnut kit which is 9x13, 16x16, 14x24. And, the snare drum with this set is absolutely incredible. The snare looks old and worn, but what a history! The drum is an early 60s Rogers chrome over brass 5x14 (that originally came from Bill Crowden's Drums Unlimited in Chicago) and has been modified with a non-Rogers strainer and butt plate. It almost looks home-made. But, this drum belonged to the great Kenny Clarke (known in the jazz world as "Klook"). Harold was in Paris with the Basie band in 1968, and Kenny (who had moved to Paris by this time) gave this drum to Harold. Harold told me that he used this drum on almost every Basie concert and on every Basie recording. The drum is exactly as Harold delivered it to me and it sounds incredible. Truly a piece of history. Here is a video of Harold using this set with the Basie band with Ella: HERE. Here is another video (very long) from 1972 as well: HERE.

And, We also have Harold's road case for his cymbals. This is a very cool item and still retains the stickers from traveling all over the world.

We are selling this set for Harold so please contact Steve at 630-865-6849 or by email at vintagedrums@aol.com for more information.
