In our NYC store. This is an incredible kit that belonged to the great Joe Morello. This set comes to us from Joe's widow, Jean Morello. This is the DW set that Joe used for many years. It is a set in classic Morello sizes but with two floor toms. The set is a DW champagne sparkle set with 9x13, 14 (deep) x 16 FT, 16x16 FT, 22 BD and a 5.5x14 DW/Craviotto solid maple shell snare drum. The set looks and sounds incredible, especially the Craviotto snare! The set was used for Joe's "Around The Kit" video as well as on the Burning For Buddy recording in 1994 and the snare drum was used on a Brubeck reunion concert in 1996. Lots of history here. Here is some input to me directly from a close friend of the Morello family who has been instrumental in assisting Joe's widow, Jean:
"I was going through my photo and video archives of Joe and found some additional information regarding the DW Champagne Sparkle wrap kit that Jean and I brought over to your shop a few weeks back. In addition to being used on Joe's second instructional video "Around The Kit", this set was used by Joe on Neil Peart's "Burning For Buddy" project back in May 1994. Attached are two photos from the session at The Power Station in NYC. Neil can be seen in the background. He's wearing a white t-shirt with the words "CARE" on it.
In addition, I have video footage showing Joe using the snare drum only from the above set during the last time that he performed with Dave Brubeck. Joe and Dave reunited on November 8th 1996 at the Community Theater in Morristown, New Jersey. Joe's group opened for Dave that night. As an encore, Joe played "Take Five" and "A Train" with Dave and his group. We brought two snare drums with us on that gig, a DW Desert Sand lacquer Edge drum and the DW Craviotto Champagne sparkle wrap snare that you currently have at the shop. Joe preferred the sound of the Champagne drum at that venue so he used it the entire night even though it didn't match the rest of the set used that night.
Here is a summary of the DW Champagne sparkle wrap kit highlights:
1. Joe's Around The Kit video (Entire set)
2. Burning For Buddy session (Entire set)
3. Last time Joe appeared and played Take Five with Brubeck (snare drum only)
I hope this will add to the provenance of this kit. Thanks for all of your help".
Kind regards,
Marvin
