This set was the very first production set for the Craviotto "Vintage Series" which was launched in 2014 as part of the Craviotto 10th Anniversary. See our original video for the Craviotto "Vintage Series" HERE.
This exact set was built by Johnny in 2013 and debuted at the January, 2014 NAMM show and is shown in the ad for this series. The Vintage Series is solid steam bent poplar and only in sizes 9x13, 16x16, 14x22, 6.5x14 with baseball bat edges top and bottom and a "vintage" build out with optional rail consollete tom holder and vintage T rods. This series was designed to replicate the full, fat sound of the '50s and '60s and works best in medium to low tunings with larger size drums. That's the sweet spot, and it is REALLY a sweet spot. And, the sound of poplar is very warm, like mahogany. In today's world, the genuine mahogany required by Craviotto for snares and drum sets is exceedingly hard to find and is being restricted in terms of exporting to the US. We applaud the efforts to preserve the natural forests, and as a result, we are no longer offering mahogany as a standard species for our shells. However, the sound of poplar is very similar, and the wood is readily available, so this becomes an excellent choice as an option for mahogany. They are incredible. The accompanying video shows the first prototype for the solid poplar kits with no sparkle lacquer. That kit was the first prototype so it was not painted. is It was originally envisioned that we'd offer sparkle lacquers as well as a natural finish. But, the beautifully warm poplar is a type of wood that has many variations in the color, often with browns and greens within the color. As a result, it is exceedingly difficult to find natural poplar solid boards that will match well. It took Johnny so long to build the set used for the video that offering it in a natural finish is just not practical. So, the Vintage Series is limited to the three sparkle lacquers, red, silver, and blue. This is an incredible configuration as you'll see and hear when you see the video.
