Harold Jones Basie Band Silver Gretsch Drum Set

SOLD 5/1/19. This is an extremely cool set with a great provenance. This set belonged to Harold Jones, who is most famous as the drummer for Basie between 1968 and 1972, but who also went on to have an incredible career that is still going strong today. He is well known as "the singer's drummer" because of his unique ability to know what to do (and what not to do) to make the singer's performance as perfect as possible. After his stint with Base from 1968-1972 he backed Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and many others. In fact, you can see him on tour now with Tony Bennett.

Harold loved Gretsch drums. He played them with Basie and also long after. This particular set is one that Harold used with the Basie band. The set is silver sparkle, early Stop Sign Badge, and the sizes are 9x13, 16x16, 14x22. The set is in great shape. The 14x22 is interesting because it is a 10 lug drum, whereas Gretsch 22s were typically 8 lugs per side. It is hard to see in the photos, but the 22 is a shade lighter than the 13 and the 16. It hasn't darkened as much over time. These drums came to me as you see them directly from Harold. There is some inlay missing on the bass drum hoop but that can be replaced with modern silver sparkle. The modern inlay won't match perfectly but the portion of the hoop with replacement inlay can be placed on the underside of the drum where it isn't visible. Cool set with a cool history!

We are selling this set for Harold so please contact Steve at 630-865-6849 or by email at vintagedrums@aol.com for more information.
