Peter Erskine is truly one of the finest players to ever sit behind a set of drums, and he has performed with some of the greatest musicians of all time. His career is rich and varied and spans decades of performing music with such artists as Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, Joni Mitchell, John Abercrombie, and many other fine artists. Peter's body of work is incredibly large, and he also has had great success as a leader with his own ensembles. In fact, we're including Peter's bio from his website for your review (Peter's website is www.petererskine.com ). In addition, Peter is a noted educator and a highly sought-after clinician.
The drumset we have in our Manhattan museum is the kit that Peter used on the Steely Dan tour in 1993, which is commemorated via the album "Alive In America". This Yamaha drum set is the actual set that Peter used on this tour. 10/12/14/16 toms, 14x22" BD (Peter chose to have a traditional/"short" depth for the bass drum versus the then-fashionable move to 16" depth BDs, so that it would "speak" as quickly as the bass drums used on the original Steely Dan studio tracks) and the 5.5x14 SD that Yamaha made for the kit (Peter alternated between this snare drum and a one-off/hand-hammered brass snare drum that was a prototype for a "Steve Gadd" snare drum which was never produced), plus basic hardware and all hard cases which are stenciled with Peter's name. This is the set that you'll hear on Peter's cuts from the "Alive In America" album and the set has been seen in many photos as well. Accompanying this set is a copy of Modern Drummer from this period, in which there is an interview of Peter and photos of the kit. Also, we will provide a letter of authenticity from Peter as well. In addition, this set has been used on many other tours and recordings. In fact, the note below from Peter to Steve gives you an excellent idea of the body of work this kit has been used on:
Steve,
Thanks for your note. Let's see ... that kit was used on:
The Steely Dan 1993 tour of the USA (Steely Dan's first tour in 20 years), plus
the Steely Dan 1994 tour of Japan and on the band's appearance on the David Letterman Late Night TV show ...it also appears on the "Alive in America" CD of Steely Dan
The Joni Mitchell "Both Sides Now" tour and television appearances of Joni Mitchell associated with that tour, etc.
It's the drumset on the "SAMPLEHEADS LIVING DRUMS" sample CD that was considered the state of the art drum sample disc for several years.
This kit was my primary studio drumset for 10+ years, appearing on such artists' albums as Barbra Streisand, Diana Krall, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Chris Botti, Don Henley's "Stormy Weather" concerts, several film soundtracks including several film soundtracks including 13 Going On 30, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Jungle Book II, The Majestic and Wild Things, ETC.
The fiber cases were provided with the kit, but have never been used ~ I had road "Anvil"-style cases built for the kit, and it was transported solely in those large/wheeled containers. These fiber cases are no longer produced by Yamaha (the gentleman who made them passed away a few years ago).
This was one of the first Vintage kits ever produced by Yamaha; the finish has aged into a beautiful warm amber glow ~ the drums are in excellent condition and they sound incredible. This was the kit that was part of Steely Dan's historic return to touring ... it's a one-of-a-kind piece ...
THANKS
Peter
