Leedy Autograph of the Stars. Complete set! Rare gold stars
As incredible as it is to believe, we have yet another of these exceedingly rare sets and this one also has unique features. Read on..
This is one of the rarest drum sets in the world! In the 40s Leedy made a drum set referred to as "Autograph of the Stars". On that drum set, the shells were a blue-green color with white stars on top of which there were facsimile signatures of famous Leedy artists. These drum sets are far more rare than Ludwig's Top Hat and Cane finish and far fewer examples exist. This set is a 9x13, 12x14, 14x28 bass drum and an 8x14 Broadway Parallel snare drum. And, the set is unique in that this version has the blue-green background but with gold stars, whereas the originals had the blue-green background with white stars (see additional photo of a snare with the white stars for comparison). I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER EXAMPLE WITH GOLD STARS. This set was also the subject of an article by John Aldridge in Not So Modern Drummer many years ago. The set is in excellent condition. The snare drum had some seam lift that was glued back down and there is some slight discoloration along the seam as shown. Exceedingly rare given; 1) the gold star pattern variation; 2) the short production of these sets (hampered by the start of WWII), and 3) the unusual nature of the "AUTOGRAPH" pattern which was not overly popular at the time. The end result is an extreme rarity.
