Slingerland 28/13/14/16/14sn Rolling Bomber Drum Set -
Here is a beautiful piece of history. A full set of Slingerland Rolling Bombers. Due to the WWII effort, the United States Government issued "General Limitation Order L-37" which outlawed musical instrument manufacturers from making instruments containing more than 10% of their weight in metal. Consequently, the drum companies of the day went to work desinging drums that would fit within this 10% requirement. The end result were drums featuring wood hoops, wood lugs, wood based throwoffs, and a general minimization of the remaining metal components. All of the 10% drums of this era featured militaristic names, with Slingerland settling on "Rolling Bomber".
The set consists of a 14X28 bass drum, 16x16 floor tom, 12x14 tom, 9x13 tom, and an 8x14 snare. Also included is a 16x16 tack bottom head floor tom. The drums feature original Slingerland heads, including the original painted bass drum head. The bass drum also has the original heater light (which still functions). These drums are in amazing condition, though there are several minor things to note:
-9x13 tom has an unoriginal (Slingerland brand) tone control installed (See Photos)
-16x16 floor tom top hoop is missing about six inches of the WMP inlay in one spot
-16x16 floor tom has two original legs and one unoriginal leg
-Bonus 16x16 tack bottom head floor tom does not include legs or reso-head. It has non-original floor tom brackets and one small extra hole near each of the floor tom brackets. It does include the original tacks
-The wrap seam on the Bonus 16x16 floor tom is not perfectly flush against the shell, although this is very slight
- Highly functional, non-original Puresound snare wires
One important thing to note is that typical to old drums of this era, there are some issues nowadays with the shells being slightly out of round, in this case mostly on the bass drum. Also, in some spots, the wood hoops have "gone with the flow" of the tension rods / claws, although this is slight and can be seen in the photos.
